Rapture Quilt

Happy New Year everyone!! I finished my first project of 2014 by making sure it was something cuddly and warm. When I’m working at my computer, I’ve been wrapping my legs in a quilt to keep warm, but it’s not so good trying to work when you have a 90″ quilt bundled around you. So I made a smaller quilt and backed it with minky. I think this will do the trick.

I apologize for the snow on the quilt but in Chicago we’ve got what seems like over a foot of snow, and it’s still going at it, lol.

For the prints in my quilt, I used a line of fabric that just came out by Pat Bravo called ‘Rapture’. This is a beautiful line with soft and sophisticated prints. I couldn’t wait to cut it up, it’s so beautiful! For the solids, I used an Art Gallery Fabrics Pure Elements solid called Raspberry Rose. Art Gallery Fabrics are the softest that you can find; the feel of it on your fingers is absolutely beautiful.

The quilt pattern is ‘Giggles’ by Jaybird Quilts. There are templates in the pattern, but to make things even easier, there is the Sidekick Ruler, which will cut several different shapes (included any that are necessary to make this pattern). The pattern was absolutely wonderful, and pieced together in a couple of hours. Julie’s diagrams are really great, so I had no question about what was going on. I have to say I really love this ruler (and I have her other ruler, the Hex N More; both of which are invaluable).

I backed my quilt with minky, so I did not quilt it. I sewed the backing to the quilt top right sides together, turned through a small opening I had left, and topstitched. Minky is super slipper, so even with a smaller quilt like this one, I had to unpick a couple of times.

Super happy with this finish. It would make a wonderful baby quilt, especially if you have to sew something up really quick.

Happiness and good health in 2014!

I’ve been wanting this Sidekick Ruler. I love a lot of Julie’s patterns and the way that she sets them up. A couple years ago I made a small quilt/throw for my dad that was backed with minky. Luckily, it was more of a whole cloth design with a couple borders and the main fabric had a design that I quilted around in a few spots. It tacked the back down without adding any pesky puckers or anything, since I especially hate unpicking 🙂

This is beautiful! I love the colors and that pink minky is perfect! I adore minky, but it is SO painful to sew with. I’ve got the sidekick ruler, but I’ve been itching to try out that pattern. You’ve inspired me to run out and get it!! 🙂

it is so luscious and I bet it’s keeping you warm! I made my niece a quilt backed with minky dot for her 7th birthday and was able to sleep with it during Christmas (I am in TX and she is in CA and we visited for Christmas) and I am convinced I MUST make myself a minky backed quilt soon!!

  4. WOW…How did you manage to finish quilt already…I just turned my machine on for the first time this year !! I swear you never sleep …that or have magic elves that come out at night !! LOL

Funny thing….. I am sitting at my computer in Ontario Canada (it is FREEZING outside) and was just thinking that I should turn up the temperature because my legs are cold. I will now go get one of my kids old baby blankets to cover them. See….your blog just saved my money on my heating bill today..ha ha

I have both of those rulers too. I did a demo with the hex and more when it came in. I need to make giggles, but I am not sure what fabric I will use. And I have a lot to do before I get to any new projects.

Nice quilt. I live on the other side of the lake in Elkhart IN. I just watched the weatherman and he said the lake effect probably will probably head back west again to your area!
