Peas and Corn Lunch Bags

IMG_8297
I am pleased to introduce you to the Peas and Corn Lunch Bags PDF (also now on paper!) sewing pattern! This pattern is now available in my pattern shop. Just in time for back-to-school!
For my lunch bags, I have used Ann Kelle ‘Super Kids’ fabrics by Robert Kaufman. These are really adorable prints, available now, and they were perfect for the lunch bags, as my kids adore them!! As always, I use Aurifil 50wt. thread for strong seams on my bags!

These insulated lunch bags are the perfect break to the day! Included in the pattern are two different styles of lunch bags(a rounded lunch bag for the intermediate sewist, and a top zip lunch bag for the advanced sewist). Whether you make them for a child or an adult, they are just the right size to fit a sandwich, several snacks, and a drink. Also included in the instructions are zippered snack bags in two different sizes – one for snacks, and another for a sandwich!

Finished Size: Lunch bag                  9” x 9” x 4”
                          Small snack bag       7” x 5”
                         Large snack bag        7” x 8”
Supplies for the Snack Bags (supplies in this list will make 1 small bag and 1 large bag)
Fat quarter of quilting cotton for exterior
Fat quarter of quilting cotton for lining
Two 9” zippers
1/2 yard of Pellon SF-101 Shape Flex fusible woven interfacing (or other mid-weight fusible interfacing)
Supplies for the Lunch Bag (will make either 1 rounded lunch bag or 1 top zip lunch bag)
1/2 yard of Exterior Fabric (or 1 yard if your fabric is directional)
1/2 yard of laminated cotton or PUL for the Lining Fabric (Pellon also make a fusible vinyl to use on regular fabric)
1/2 yard of Pellon® #975 Insul-Fleece (or fleece insulated sew-in interfacing)
1/2 yard of By Annie’s Soft and Stable™, available at local quilt shops or on-line
(Soft and Stable is a 1/8” thick, foam sew-in interfacing; one of my testers also recommends automotive headliner fabric in place of the Soft and Stable; you can also substitute a needled fleece fusible interfacing for the Soft and Stable, such as Pellon #TP971F Thermolam Plus fusible interfacing; also, fusible fleece or batting will work as well)
1 package of (3 yard) double-fold bias tape, 1/2” wide (or make your own)

16” zipper for the top zip lunch bag OR 22” zipper for the rounded lunch bag

I had a lot of fun making these bags! They are great for both an adult or a child (in fact, a lot of my testers made them for adult lunches!).

And here is the work that my wonderful testers turned in (and on such short notice, as I realized I wanted to write a lunch bag pattern in August…oh, if only I had realized a few weeks earlier, lol!).
Cecillia made this awesome version in Echino bus fabrics. When I first saw the photo, I had thoughts of stealing this bag. Fantastic work, Mehran!
Anna made her rounded lunch bag instead as a vanity/make-up bag. She used fusible fleece to interface the exterior fabric, and a thin cotton batting as an interlining with the lining fabric. She couldn’t quickly locate a 22″ zipper, so she used two shorter zips, which meet at the center. Despite the supply obstacles, I think her bag is breath-taking!
Joyce made this darling round top lunch bag, and she quilted the exterior fabric around the squares. It looks so beautiful, perfect for a woman or little girl! Joyce said it took her 2-3 hours to cut and fuse/baste the fabrics, and 4 hours to sew everything together. You can read more about Joyce’s bag on her blog here!
Ree of Sincerely, Ree made this frea-king adorable rounded lunchbag with a turquoise bow on the front to match the zipper. I get a bit misty-eyed thinking how beautiful this is. She used canvas to back the exterior fabric instead of the Soft and Stable.
Pam made this whimsical pink and blue print rounded lunch bag, and I am showing you the inside (first pic) and outside of her bag, so you can see how beautiful she’s finished hers. Great job Pam!!
Cindy of Raspberry Sunshine made this beautiful bag in an adorable alphabet print fabric. I’m giving you the side view of her bag so you can see how the zipper panel looks! Wonderful and precise work as always, Cindy!
Alli made BOTH lunch bags, and she was happy to report that her husband said that the bags kept her son’s meal nice and cold on his field trip! She made the bags with flannel-backed vinyl, laminated cotton, and insul-brite. Fabulous!!
Mhairi made this rounded lunch bag for her daughter’s dance class. She had the great idea to use a magnetic catch to attach the snack bag to the back of the lunch bag. Miraculously, the bag holds a water bottle *and* dance shoes! Beautiful!
Rebecca from Our Busy Little Bunch made this eye-popping monkey lunchbox with laminate fabric from Fabri-Quilt! It’s totally adorable, isn’t it?!
Kelleigh made this top zip lunch bag for her godson for his first day of school. She said that this was the first time she had ever sewn binding. Uhh…I’m a little speechless! It’s amazing!
Annette made this beautiful version of the rounded lunch bag. She used a wider sport zipper for the closure on her bag, and I think it looks just fabulous!
Chloe made her rounded lunch bag with an oilcloth fabric, and she said that her husband was quoted as saying, “It looks just like one you buy in shops.” High praise indeed! Fabulous work Chloe!!
Rebeckah made the top zip lunch bag with this great Star Trek fabric. She did a fabulous job, and this fabric shows that the lunch bag is not only great for a child, but for an adult as well!
Angela of Sewing with Squeak got ambitious with her lunch bags; not only did she make both the top zip and the round top versions, but she made them in patchwork! These are just adorable for a child! Beautiful job Angela!
Sally made this cute floral rounded lunch bag. It turned about awesome! Sally had some good recommendations if you are using PUL for the inside of your lunch bag: ” if sewers are using PUL, that they will want to avoid pinning through it as much as possible since it does decrease the waterproof/resistance.  Also, according to the info I could find, you should not iron it.  I was too afraid to try!”
Liana made this awesome version in Star Wars fabric! Her bag looks so well-finished and sturdy, I am impressed! Great job Liana!
Nancy made this rounded lunch bag in New York street map fabric, and now she is the envy of all her friends. Look how nicely it fits her lunch! Beautiful work on both the inside and out, Nancy!!
Maria of Beautiful Blooms made this cute rounded lunch bag out of Sandi Henderson fabric. She said her girls were fighting over it immediately! Maria said that she ended up buying a 3-pack of PUL from Joann’s (the cuts were each 21″ x 24″), and she said one cut was the perfect amount for making the lunchbag!
Yvette of Black Cat and Birdie made this cute, well, birdie! rounded lunchbag with a great pindot fabric for the exterior.
Audrey made the rounded lunch bag out of this beautiful earthy batik! I think it looks great, especially with a zipper that blends right into the fabric! Fantastic work Audrey!
Fiona made this adorable butterfly rounded lunch bag. It is so beautifully-finished, even the bottom corners! Wonderful work on this one, Fiona!
Alisha of Crafty Brooklyn Army Wife made this masculine lunch bag using New York Giants fabric. Wonderful! I think my husband needs to start bringing a lunch to work, too. 😉 Read more about her lunch bag here.
Toni of Life in a Pink Bunny Suit made this adorable dino rounded lunch bag, and as you can see, it fits a lot on the inside! Wonderful job Toni, it’s beautiful!
Cyndi of The Nosy Pepper made this chic and modern rounded lunch bag using Amy Butler fabrics. She used automotive headliner fabric combined with the exterior fabric. I think it looks sweet and adorable! Great work Cyndi!
Liz from Moments… made this owly rounded lunch bag! This one is a gift for her niece, and so she will have to make another one for herself (oh darn!!). 🙂 Cute cute lunch bag Liz!!
Susan of SB Stitching made this lunch set using Star Wars fabric. She recommends this tutorial in case you would like to make your own laminate fabric for the interior of the lunch bag. Beautifully finished Susan!!
Marta made this adorable set in a sweet floral fabric; she made the rounded lunch bag, and both sizes of the snack bags. Really beautiful and special, Marta!
Becky made her rounded lunch bag with a soft textured fabric. I also like the dotty handle, it looks terrible cute at the top of the bag. Wonderful job Becky!!
Thank you so much to all of the pattern testers!! Amazing as always! If you like what you saw, you can check out the Peas and Corn pdf sewing pattern here!
