Lapin Noir Bag

Lapin-Noir-Cover
I’m excited to introduce you to the Lapin Noir Bag, now available as a pdf download and also on paper from my pattern shop! I made this bag using the new ‘Nordika’ fabric line from Jeni Baker for Art Gallery Fabrics, which is available in quilt shops starting in July!
I named this pattern ‘Lapin Noir’, which is French for black rabbit. I don’t know any French, but it just seemed like the perfect name. Jeni Baker has a black rabbit named George, who is the most adorable thing in the world, so it just felt like a fitting tribute. 🙂
This bag converts from a handled tote to a large carry-all, with a cell phone pocket and enough pockets inside and out to keep your most important items within easy reach. The handles are corded and covered in fabric, with pretty knots at each end, and the long strap is attached to the bag with fun swivel clips. If you’re looking for a bag to showcase your favorite fabric print, this is it!
The pdf pattern includes 15 pages of sewing instructions, complete with 34 step-by-step color photos.
Finished Size: 13” long x 15” tall (when opened up)
Supplies
1/2 yard of Exterior Fabric
3/4 yard fabric for bottom accents and pockets
1 yard of fabric for lining, straps, and handles
2-1/2 yards of 20” wide Pellon® SF-101 Shape Flex® fusible woven interfacing (or light-weight fusible interfacing)
2/3 yard of 58” wide By Annie’s Soft and Stable™, available at local quilt shops or on-line
(Soft and Stable is a 1/8” thick, foam sew-in interfacing; one of my testers also recommends automotive headliner fabric in place of the Soft and Stable; you can also substitute a needled fleece fusible interfacing for the Soft and Stable, such as Pellon #TP971F Thermolam Plus fusible interfacing)
2 yards of 1/2” cotton cording
Two 1” metal swivel clips
Two 1” metal d-rings
1/2” magnetic snap

Two 12” zippers

The bottom of the bag has a gusset, and there are zippered pockets in the back of the exterior, and also one on the lining side of the bag. There is a small pocket on the exterior of the bag as well, which is perfect for most cell phones.

As always, my pattern testers have turned in some exceptional work! I don’t know why exactly, but I haven’t been this excited about a pattern reveal in some time! I think it’s because this pattern allows for some beautiful fabric combinations! A heartfelt thank you to my testers!
Angela made this a-maze-ing bag out of Lotta Jansdotter fabrics, which she’s pieced and quilted. The extra work was definitely worth it, this bag is drool-worthy!
Sonia from Fabric and Flowers made her bag with lush Liberty fabric. She used a teal fabric peaking out from the lining, and I think it’s the perfect coordinate for this bag. You can read more about her experience making her bag right here!
Joyce made her bag in a bright bird and floral print, with purple accent fabric. She’s done a very thorough job reviewing the pattern as well, and it’s on her blog!
Rebecca made this beautiful version, and I love how well the turquoise fabric contrasts with the navy! It really brings my eye around the entire bag!
Rhonda of Quilter in the Gap made this bag in British fabric which I am completely jealous of! This is an awesome bag, especially with the textured strap! Fantastic job Rhonda!
DeeAnn made her bag in a darling high-heel fabric, with coordinating strap and chocolate accents. So pretty and precise, wonderful work as always DeeAnn!!
Beth made her bag in Luxe in Bloom fabrics, and I think it looks really posh! I particularly love the light chartreuse handles and lining, it’s the perfect coordinate to this bag, and the black really makes it stand out!
Maria made her bag in show-stopping Anna Maria Horner fabric. Just gorgeous and so professionally done! I also wanted to share that Maria said that it has been St. John’s Fair in her town: “On the San Juan’s night people build fires on the beach and have a bath at midnight (yes, the water was too cold) and make a wish, students use to burn their notes and books to celebrate that they’ve finished the grade, everyone goes to the beach that night with family and friends: Summer has come!”

Cheree of Sincerely, Ree made this beautiful bag with a summer floral print and citrusy coordinating fabrics. It reminds me of a cool glass of lemonade. Smashing work on this one, Cheree!
Cyndi of The Nosy Pepper made her bag with a lot of bright and textured fabrics, and I simply love this combination here! It is totally something I would make and wear for myself, so I love it!
Natasha of Houseful of Nicholes mad this graphic print bag, and out of personal preference, she decided to leave off the corded handles. I think it’s really creative, and I like that she’s put her personal touch on this bag! Great job Natasha!
Molly made her bag to take on vacation with her, and the chevron print with the bicycle fabric surely makes me think of summer! I also love that she made the floral print trim to go around her zipper! Great job Molly!
Leah of L3Designs made her bag in a wool plaid fabric. For some reason, I became fixated on the silver metal zipper and how beautiful it looked with the plaid and the black accent fabric. Overall stunning finish Leah!
Lorena of My Way Of… made her bag out of a bright canvas fabric for the exterior, and cotton fabric for the lining. She finished her bag in about a day and a half, and I think the results are spectacular! Wonderful work Lorena!
Anna from Charmed Liebling made this beautiful paisley bag, which she says will be staying with her instead of going into her Etsy shop. I completely agree with her that these are great spring colors for a bag! Wonderful work!!
Maria made her bag using Tina Givens fabric. I love that the corded handles look beautiful and full, and the white print fabric really makes them pop!
Maria of Mia Creates made her bag in beautiful neutral fabrics, and as you can see she used raw braided cording instead of encasing it in fabric…I think that’s a fantastic idea and it really works with the fabrics she’s chosen. You can also see that she has a bit of the dark brown fabric running down the side of the bag. Way to take a pattern and make it your own Maria!!
Alyson of The Hasty Quilter made her bag in a wonderful elephant print. Really beautiful work on this one, Alyson, especially with the black print accent fabric!
Alisha of Crafty Brooklyn Army Wife made this fantastic bag in orange fabrics. It came out beautifully! Alisha also wrote a blog post about her experience making this bag, and you can read about it right here!
Fiona made this bag for her eldest daughter, who got to choose her own fabric. Beautiful work, and it looks like she is already getting some use out of it! Horray for a successful project all around!
Bernie made her bag in a soft floral fabric, with sage green accents to go with the darker green shading in the leaves of her main fabric. So very lovely, and her corded handles look perfect!!
Tiffany of This Crafty Fox made her bag in Joel Dewberry fabrics. It’s really stunning with the small volume accent fabric. I knew that this pattern would be Tiffany’s ‘thing’, so I was really worried what she would think about her finished bag, but it looks awesome!!
Kelleigh made her bag with wool and suede, and used a linen for the lining. If you look closely, you can also see that she’s quilted the bottom panel of the bag. So pretty! Kelleigh is a teacher and plans on using this bag for bag-to-school. Wonderful!!
Marta made her bag once again in awesome Ikea fabric. She opted instead to make softer handles and the top of the bag and I think they look very pretty! The red is a really great accent for this bag as well!
Donna made her bag in a bright purple batik fabric, and she quilted the exterior of her bag as well! Very beautiful seeing the bag in this kind of fabric, and it seems perfect for summer!
Wendy made her awesome bag in Amy Butler fabric, with chocolate accents.  It just turned out fabulous! Wendy said she was hesitant to make the exterior/lining zippered pockets, but she had success and I am happy about that as well!
Emily of Half Square Triangle made this pretty bag out of mushroom fabric and plaid for the accents. I think it’s gorgeous, and very artfully photographed too! Super cute, I love this!
Samantha of At Home with Mrs. H. got caught red-handed with her 50 Shades of Grey book in the ropes and chains aisle of the store. The stock boys didn’t believe her when she said she was looking for some cotton rope to make a handbag. And I think that looks like leather to me (faux Ostrich skin)…what do you think? All joking aside, a fabulous bag and I love seeing the use of different fabrics!
Liz from Moments… made her bag with one fabric for the front (red polka dot) and another fabric for the back (black and white print), so when her bag is folded over, it gives a really nice effect! Very creative on that one Liz, and the bag looks perfect!
Thank you testers!!! If you liked this bag, it’s available now in my pattern shop!

Me too Liz, I’ve already got my next one planned! I mentioned to Maria that I was going to use bare rope next time and she said it was a good job I said that before I saw her bag. I think she was going to charge me royalties for pinching her idea of bare rope 😉

I love this bag! I can’t begin to choose a favorite, and the cool thing is that they all look so different even though they’re from the same pattern. I think the name is because you could fit a little black bunny in the bag perfectly…just don’t get stopped by any TSA airport screeners 🙂
