Gina – Hey Quilters! Welcome to the rectangle chapter. Tula mentions at the beginning of this chapter that rectangles open up more possibilities in design because you can play with the rotation. Block #16 is one of those blocks where I can immediately imagine making a whole quilt based on this block alone. The little blocks within this block don’t rotate around the way you’d expect so be sure to lay the pieces out before and as you sew them together. I used a little Neptune, Salt Water, a dark blue shot cotton and some Echino dots. I should have fussy cut my dots to show up like they do in the book sketch, but didn’t really notice they wouldn’t show up at all until I was already knee deep in the block.

Block #17 gave me some problems. I tried to save myself some time by chain piecing all the pairs together. I ironed them open and paired them again and while I laid out the “final” setting I noticed that it was 3 pair to each section, not 4 pair and I had to rip some stitches.Doh!

Then maybe due to having to rip stitches or just being frustrated my 2 sides to the block didn’t like up along the edges when the middle seams were nested so I ripped it again and had to make a compromise. In the end I really like the 2 fabrics together, Plume & Salt Water so I love my block, but definitely not the most precise! This is another block that I would love to make over and over for a whole quilt.

Block #18 was quick and easy after the last block. I even stopped and played with the block layout a little and considered a couple different options, but went with the darkest purple towards the center. I am in love with the little bunny I fussy cut for this block and had this Full Moon Forest FQ I had been saving forever that I was finally able to use. I am looking forward to a lot of blocks in this rectangle chapter and especially can’t wait to see all of the different versions you sew together. Keep up the good work!

Sara – I’m afraid I fell a little behind on my blocks; I was up until past 1am last night finishing up a pattern for a deadline, and I still hadn’t done this week’s #tula100 blocks. Eek! Thankfully they are quick sews…I got up this morning and cut and pieced my blocks in a hurry!

Block 16

As I work through my solids blocks more and more, I feel like I need a bigger variety of colors in order to keep the contrast looking nice. I replenished some of my pinks, purples, yellows, and greens last week, but I think I still need to order some more blue and orange. After looking at the Michael Miller Cotton Couture Color card, I almost ordered some more of their blues, but they looked a bit too greenish for me. Perhaps I’ll look into some Art Gallery next, although I don’t have anything physical to compare their colors.

Block 17

I felt like my Block 17 looked a little bit wonky when it was finished, but I am hoping when it is better anchored in with the sashing fabrics, it will straighten out.

Block 18

I was very happy to see that these blocks were exceptionally easy this time around, especially Block 18! Just a note if you are following along for the prizes: I will be announcing June’s winner, as well as the next prize for July, this week!
