Paper-pieced Raccoon

I just wanted to share what I made for my dad for Father’s Day yesterday; this paper-pieced mini quilt. Since I was born, my dad has played in this softball league (I’m 31), and the team is the Raccoons. My parents have raccoon dog toys for their dog, a couple raccoon statues made of wood…they like raccoon stuff. So when I saw this pattern over on Shape Moth, I knew it was the one.

For my mini, I used gray and white text fabrics, and 3 colorways from Lizzy House’s Pearl Bracelets line. It took a lot of paper-pieced segments to make this little guy, and my matching up of seams is not perfect, but I can definitely see a raccoon here. 😉

Joanna from Shape Moth is always doing a ton of creative things that blow me away; she doesn’t make things that you have seen anywhere else, and that’s really refreshing! She recently made this Feathers Mini Quilt that just about made me sigh with how awesome it was…the creativity was genius, the fabric color choices spot on, I just can’t say anything bad about it.

If you’re interested in seeing more of her paper-pieced patterns, check out her for sale patterns as well as her free patterns and tutorials. I really enjoyed making my raccoon; if you have never paper-pieced before, the pattern I used does not contain step instructions showing you how to paper piece; however, there are several graphics, and all the templates are included, so if you have a bit of experience, you will be perfectly fine.

If you like this, Joanna also co-hosted the Forest Quilt Along, which showcased nature-themed paper-pieced blocks, like these feather below. The tutorials for the blocks are available online, and they are just brilliant. The feathers are my absolute favorite, and I feel like they would be easily worked into many other projects. Another of my favorite J-ladies hosted this quilt along, and that is Julianna of Sewing Under the Rainbow, who is also brilliant. You should be following both of their blogs. 😉
