Paper-pieced Sunrise Clutch

I am really excited to introduce you to my third pattern, the Paper-pieced Sunrise Clutch! I have been on a real paper-piecing kick lately. Although the blocks take a bit more time than regular quilt piecing, the results are often amazing…paper-piecing provides sharp points and angles that you often could never get from regular piecing.

The pattern includes the paper-piecing templates used to make the clutch, and I have chosen a design that would not be technically complicated for someone who has never paper-pieced before. The clutch also has a structured top, a recessed zipper, and an optional wrist strap. The instructions include 11 pages of sewing instructions and 23 full-color step-by-step photos. You can find the pattern available here.

Finished Size: 12” long x 6-1/2” tall
Supplies Needed
– fabric for the exterior top band/bottom – 2 strips, each 12-1/2” x 2” (Exterior Top)
                                                                                    1 strip 11-1/2” x 2” (Exterior Bottom)
– fabric for the sun rays – 40 strips, each 2” x 8-1/2” (would be great from a jelly roll too!)
(total yardage required for sun rays – 3/4 yard, or 1/4 yard each of 3 different fabrics)
– fabric for the sun center – 4 rectangles, each 1-1/2” x 3”
– fat quarter of fabric for lining
– 3/4 yard Pellon SF-101 Shape Flex fusible woven interfacing (or a lightweight fusible)
– 1/4 yard Pellon #809 Décor Bond
– 1/4 yard Pellon #TP971F Thermolam fusible interfacing (needled fleece fusible interfacing)

Optional: for the wrist strap, please add 1/2” metal d-ring and 1/2” long metal swivel clip

I was very lucky to have some very great testers to work through the pattern. I must say that I have the most wonderful group of testers…they are critical of the pattern instructions in a way that is helpful, and I really can say that I haven’t taken anything they’ve said personally…they have been incredibly kind (and some have even apologized for being criticial, lol). 🙂 Here are their bags!!

Kelleigh made this awesome rainbow version of the back with black and white pin dot for the top, bottom, and strap. This clutch is really stunning, and also goes great with any outfit! Wowza!!

Mona of Mona’s Box on Etsy made this beautiful chocolate and blue version of the clutch (psst! You can also find this actual clutch for sale in her Etsy shop!!)

DeeAnn made this great version of the clutch using a Riley Blake jelly roll…the colors are so candy bright, I think it looks fantastic with the striped top band too!

Samantha made this lovely clutch using green and purple pindot fabrics.

Sue made this beautiful version in 3 different colors. Green is my favorite color, and I loved the blue cloud-looking fabrics used for the paper piecing, top band, and strap! She said that she gave it to her daughter and she loves it!

Jennifer made this awesome clutch in orange, yellow, and brown. I love the bright warm colors, and they do exactly look like the rays of the sun! Great choice in the brown too!!

Linda from I Finally Have Time made her clutch using a Riley Blake jelly roll. She also wrote a very lovely blog post on her experience sewing the clutch! You can read the post here!

Sarah made her clutch in an extremely lovely combination of fabrics!

Jane picked the perfect fabrics for hers! I did want to use oranges and reds in mine, but I just didn’t know how to put them together…I just love hers!

Here is another great use of red and orange from Emily of Half Square Triangle!

Sally from My Bambino’s Closet made this gorgeous version that reminds me of marble…such pretty colors, and I think it would coordinate with any outfit wonderfully!

Alyssa made this great version, and I love the idea of using a print in combination with a solid like she did. It almost makes the sun rays look three-dimensional. Great job!!!

Anna made this stunning version; Anna is an experienced dressmaker, and you can see that she is modeling one of her dresses in the photo, proving that the clutch is fantastic to go out in the evening!

Nanette of Yeah I Made That made this refreshing version in bright Anna Maria Horner ‘Lou Lou Thi’ fabrics! I love this, and I love the floral that she used on the top band!

Joyce made this awesome version in hot pink and gray fabrics. The clutch definitely has an Asian feel to it, and I love the backdrop (and wish I wasn’t looking at snow out of my window right now)!! She wrote about her clutch on her blog!

Maria made this lovely softly colored clutch using a Tina Givens jelly roll. I love the contrasting stitching on the top band and also on the wrist strap! Love the purple with the brown!!

I wanted to show you a photo of the front and back of Jennifer from Fluff ‘n Stuff‘s clutch, because she did a completely unique look on the front and back! I love that her lining also continues the prism colors of the front of the clutch, super creative!!

Cyndi of The Noisy Pepper made this great version that actually does look like a sunset, with the warm colors and the sky! I love what she did, and of course there are my favorite…polka dots!!!

Jeannie made this *awesome* version in black, red, and white. I think it looks just perfect! She was so excited to show me the photo to, and I hope she gets a lot of use out of it! 🙂

Aren’t they great?!?! Thank you again for taking a look, and if you’re interested in purchasing the pattern and trying it out yourself, please visit my pattern shop!

All the clutches look wonderful! All your testers did a wonderful job showing different version of how this could turn out with different colors and printed fabrics together. Paper piecing can be scary for beginners but this shouldn’t be too hard for a first timer. 🙂

  5. Wonderful – the pattern testers did you proud again, and really show off how many different looks the choice of fabric can give your lovely pattern. xxx

Is this paper-pieced-sunrise clutch only available in this single sun beam design..? As we can see there are range of colors but only with single design.
