Illusion Paper Pieced Block

I originally was not going to show this until I had finished the entire quilt, but some last-minute assignments came up, and so sadly this quilt will have to go into the UFO pile for now. 🙁
The pattern I used to make this quilt (or, 25% of my quilt at least) is the Illusion paper-pieced pattern by Diane Bohn. Diane graciously enlarged her original 12″ blocks to 16″ blocks for me, so if I followed the layout in the diagram below, I would end up with a 60″ x 60″ quilt.
The pattern includes cutting templates and the actual paper piecing template, as well as a ‘coloring page’ for you to decide on your fabric layout. I found this really helpful, as I knew which fabrics that I wanted to use, but didn’t know which order to use.

The fabrics I used were ‘Postmodern’ by Suzuko Koseki. They came out this year, and although they are not being printed anymore, you can still find them in some places online. These fabrics are very large text, which is why I wanted to make them in the 16″ blocks (and also, so I wouldn’t have to make so many blocks…I guess I’ll just call that lazy).
The white print that I used for the borders is a personal ads (you know, “single white female looking for sporty male” type of thing) fabric that I got from the lovely Laura at Sewing Summit.

If you’re making a quilt like mine, I plotted out how much fabric I would need, and it takes 1 yard blue fabric, 1-1/2 yards pink, 1 yard purple, 1 yard brown, 1-1/2 yards yellow, and 1 yard white. The assembly of each block goes really quickly, and I had a lot of fun doing it! There are no instructions for paper piecing in the pattern if you haven’t done it before, although it is very easy to assemble if you know the basics of paper piecing.

I was really excited about this quilt, and hope I can get back to working on it soon!
