Hi everyone! My name is Brenda and I own Pink Castle Fabrics. I’m excited to show you my quilt today for Sara’s sew along. Thanks to Sara and Tula for thinking of me. I have to tell you I’m a big fan of Tula Pink fabrics. I think Tula has some amazing artistic skills and she really does an awesome job of putting in the details in her work. High Five Tula! I really feel this is your calling. Way to own it!
I’m taking over Sara’s lovely blog today to tell you about my experience with Tula’s Wind Swept pattern. This is my first experience with one of Tula’s patterns and I have to say it was very easy to understand. I made the Medium size (this is giant! it’s a Queen size) of the Wind Swept and the fabric amounts were correct, I had enough for everything I needed. I was originally worried that I may not have enough variety in the gray background prints that I chose. I thought it might be difficult to design it to look random without repeating patterns next to each other but it was quite easy! There were plenty of options to choose from when I was putting it up on the design wall and I didn’t have to put many repeats next to each other, even towards the end.
I decided to go with light to medium gray prints and solids for the background and Kona Pomegranate for the “windmill”. I really wanted it to pop. I chose basics for the gray prints to give the background a little texture without adding color. I really like the way it turned out.
The construction is pretty straight forward, it’s a LOT of half square triangles. I chain pieced all of these while watching a few hours of shows on Netflix and it went pretty quickly. I bought myself a Sewline Fabric Pencil and Quick Quarter Template to help with the marking and sewing of the half square triangles. They both really were a big help. I just marked the back and sewed on the lines! I have to admit these are the best looking HSTs I’ve ever made. The guide that Tula has to construct the top is really straight-forward and easy to follow. I think the only thing I had trouble with was making sure seams were pressed to the proper side, I really should have pressed all of them open like the directions told me…
I did decide to keep this top as a square for now and I didn’t add the 2 bars on the top and bottom. Mainly because I haven’t decided which gray fabric to use for them. All in all though, I think this quilt turned out amazing, don’t you?

The close up pictures are great. This quilt has so much shading from the different colors of grey that it looks really complicated but not busy. I like that a lot!

This quilt is wonderful ~ love the contrasts of color! I was on a quilting retreat for 6 days and got a chance to actually sit down and really look at the patterns in Tula’s book. There are a few I MUST make! Thanks for all this inspiration!
