Tula Pink Sew Along

Today’s guest post is from Jessica over at Sew Crafty Jess. This series is full of many quilters of whom I am very jealous of their abilities, and this has been true of my thoughts on Jessica for some time! She’s amazing! And as proof, here’s her Moda Bake Shop pattern that just went up today (jawdrop!).

Hi everyone!  My name is Jess and I blog over at SewCraftyJess.  I’ve been sewing  and quilting for almost three years now, and I’ve been a Tula fan for just as long.  Her Parisville and Prince Charming lines were two of the first “designer” fabric lines that opened up my eyes to the world of “non-Joann’s” fabrics!  Thanks so much Sara for thinking of me and letting me take over your blog for the day!
When Sara asked if I’d like to take part in a Tula Pink blog hop, I jumped at  the chance.  I had a fat quarter bundle of Birds and the Bees just waiting to be cut into.  It’s like it was meant to be.  In perusing Tula’s patterns,  I loved the Snow Globes pattern, and that it really accommodated and showed off fabric lines with larger prints (hello cute little squirrels)!

I chose to make the medium size quilt, which is a very generous lap size (64″ x 84″).  Tula gives two options for fabric cutting, one with all the center focus prints the same (like this Nightshade version) or an option with different fabrics as the center focal prints.  I chose to use different prints for the centers, but veered off the cutting instructions for the prints, as I had a fat quarter bundle on hand, as opposed to the half yard cuts she recommends for  the medium size.  As an extra bonus, this let me use 24 different prints, instead of the 12 different prints she recommends in the pattern.
Unfortunately I can’t speak on the cutting accuracy in the pattern, but if you use fat quarters, it works out great!  I chose to use 12 different fat quarters as the center prints and the squares (I picked the larger scale prints in the line), and then 12 fat quarters for the block borders.  For the background fabric, I chose Timeless Treasures Crosshatch Sketch in Cream.

I absolutely love how this quilt has come together.  The construction was very straight forward, and the instructions are very easy to follow.  I even have a stack of left over half square triangles for another project from the leftover corner pieces.    I’d put it at a beginner/confident beginners level.

One word of caution, or really just a heads up…those corners that look like they are about 1/4″ off?  They are supposed to be like that.  When I started piecing the quilt top, I thought that my cutting or piecing was off, but after consulting the pattern, I noticed they are supposed to be off like that!  Whew.
Overall I would highly highly recommend this pattern (and really any Tula pattern).  Those center octogon prints finish at 10″ square, so this is a great quilt to show off larger scale prints.  Thanks again Sara for having me!
