Tula Pink Sew Along

Lindsey from LRstitched made the beautiful quilt featured today. You probably remember Lindsey from the Zakka Style Sew Along that she ran over the spring and summer, which was crazy popular. Check out her blog for some more quilty goodness!!

I’ve been looking forward to sharing my quilt top with you and the day is finally here! I chose to make a quilt from Tula’s book called “Fairy Tale Lane”. I love whimsical things and the dashed sashing pulled me right in.

The pattern is straightforward and simple enough for a beginner who is confident with getting a good 1/4″ seam. The sashing pieces were a bit tedious, but the result was well worth the effort! The finished size measures 68″ x 76″ which is just 12″ shy of a twin quilt. If you’ve never made a bed size quilt before, don’t let the size scare you away. The blocks themselves are large and easy to piece and the quilt goes together quite quickly! The pattern calls for 1/3 yard of 15 different prints for the blocks, 2 yards for the background/sashing, 1/3 yard for the dotted lines and 4.5 yards for the back. If you purchase your fabric online it can be hard to find a shop that sells 1/3 yard of a print. I received a fat quarter bundle of Field Study for my birthday and used that for the prints. It contained 24 fat quarters and was plenty of fabric to complete the blocks. I used the fabric yardage listed for the other portions and the amounts are just right. You have enough left over to fix a mistake, but not so much that you feel you are wasting fabric.

I am crazy excited about the finished top! I love this pattern and how using a piece of the background fabric in each block makes portions of the pattern blend into the background and makes it feel randomly pieced. I’m a big fan of Tula Pink and used her fabrics from Nest to make my very first quilt! I continue to love what she comes up with and this pattern has been added to my favorites. I love that part too, where you put pieces of the sashing in the other blocks. I’ve always been a fan of mysteriously (how’d she do that)made blocks in a quilt.

What fun fabrics you’ve used for this quilt! And thanks for the info on making your fat quarter bundle work – that’s always hard for me knowing if fat quarters are going to be enough to substitute in a pattern.

I have a stack of fat quarters and I was trying to figure out how to make it work for that quilt. Thanks for the heads up. Love Field Study.
