Tula Pink Sew Along

I am BEYOND excited that today is the official kick-off of the Tula Pink Sew Along! I think I began organizing this in May after I saw Tula Pink’s booth at Spring Quilt Market (yeah, I’m a little crazy).

Tula Pink‘s upcoming fabric line is called ‘Salt Water’, and it will be revealed at Fall Quilt Market next month. I’m pretty much insanely obsessed with the idea of this line. I’m thinking of just parking myself in the booth and pretending like I live there for the weekend.

Swim, Bike, Quilt

I am also a stop on the blog train for 100 Quilts for Kids, which is organized by Katie from Swim, Bike, Quilt! This event is a charity quilt drive to inspire people to make quilts for children in need. Check out the link to learn more about how you can help, or to see quilty inspiration and tutorials to make your own quilt!

So, on to my Tula quilt! I chose the pattern ‘Dream Weaver’, which is in Tula Pink’s book ‘Quilts from the House of Tula Pink’ (you can see my review of the book here). Below you can see 2 quilts that Tula has made in this pattern: the photo on the left is directly from the book (in Prince Charming fabric), and the photo on the right is a photo that I snapped at Spring Quilt Market in her booth. My heart about stopped when I saw this quilt (the ‘Cartwheels’ quilt was in front of it, so the ‘Dream Weaver’ quilt was revealed when ‘Cartwheels’ was pulled to the side). She made it in ‘The Birds and the Bees’ fabric, and I knew when I saw it, that I had to use the same fabrics. She didn’t use every single fabric from the line, but when I bought a bundle, I loved them all equally and couldn’t bear to leave any of them out, so I just used them all. ๐Ÿ™‚

The pattern is very straight-forward and easy to make; a beginning quilter would be able to make this quilt. Besides the long rows, there are only 3 different straight cuts of fabric that you need to make for this pattern, which is really great! The pattern makes an 80″ x 96″ finished quilt. The supplies needed are 20 prints at 1/3 yard each (I used 29 different fabrics, so I used a bit less than a fat quarter each), and 1-1/8 yards of fabric for the horizontal strips (for mine, I used fabric that I dyed myself). I used Aurifil 50wt. thread to piece it.

Piecing the rows went extremely fast. There’s nothing like a well-written pattern and easy construction for a few evenings of relaxing sewing. In the book, Tula Pink also shows how the quilt was quilted, so you can get ideas on how you’d like to quilt your own.

I was only able to finish my quilt top for the event, but I’m looking forward to seeing it all finished up. I’m still trying to decide on a good backing fabric…which fabric from ‘The Birds and the Bees’ would you use as a backing?? A couple months ago, I made a matching body pillow out of all of the same fabrics. I think they go together really well, don’t you?

Check back tomorrow for the next Tula Pink quilt in the series, and don’t forget to check the original sew along post to see how you can join in the event, get discounts on the fabric and patterns, and see the full list of event sponsors (thank you wonderful sponsors!!).

I love it! I would use the Pool Squirrel fabric on the back. I like a big graphic pattern on the back. Back’s should be interesting too!

I heart this quilt so very very much. The minute I saw photos of it from Quilt Market, I started scheming to make one of my very own! (I’m so glad I’m not the only crazy Tula person to require one of their very own.) And I love the body pillow! All around love! ๐Ÿ™‚

I saw it at market too. Totally by accident, we took a detour to a quilt shop on the way home. It turned out to be “the Home of Tula Pink”. WOOHOO. Fell in love with all her fabrics, and patterns, and book, and…well you get it right?

Hi Sara this is a fantastic place to review all Tula s quilts..but I noticed one thing in ur dream weaver it doesn’t have the flow of colors which Tula has as you have not alternated the same colors so I think the overall effect has changed….
But I love ur blog ..keep up the good work

I have Tula’s book and this looks like the perfect choice for me to join in on this sew along. I think I will have to have some of Tula’s fabric to use in my project.

  22. Oh LOVE!!! Your hand dyed fabric sets off this fabric beautifully. Dream Weaver was my favorite pattern the minute I opened the book and I bought a half yard bilundle of the Birds and the Bees line as soon as it came out with the same intention. I’ve been contemplating how to include all of the fabrics too and love your interpretation. Originally I thought I’d just make it widER, but think your decision to continue the rainbow onto the next row, thereby changing where the color locks land creates a more dynamic quilt. My one question, how did you decide what little pieces to place into the larger strips. In Tula’s pattern she reverses the rainbow and inserts. It doesn’t appear that you did the same and I can’t really tell if you used the Little pieces of fabrics in the same Order as you used the big pieces. I kinda think once I cut all the pieces out, I’ll arrange them several ways before I decide, but would love to know exactly what you did. Thanks, Caryn

  23. I love your quilt! Found it by searching on google to se fabric choises with the Bird and Bees fabrics. I’m off cutting the fabric right now ๐Ÿ™‚
    Thanks for the inspiration ๐Ÿ™‚
