Book Review and My Quilt: Fat Quarterly Shape Workshop for Quilters

My quilt top, made using a pattern from the book Fat Quarterly Shape Workshop

This giveaway is now closed. Winner is #133 Bobbie! Congratulations!

I have the immense pleasure to bring you not only a book review, not only a glimpse of a project that I made from the book, but also giveaway of a copy of Fat Quarterly Shape Workshop for Quilters, written by 4 of your favorite Fat Quarterly members. If you are not familiar with Fat Quarterly, it is an ezine that is jam-packed with beautiful quilted projects that you can make. Much as the name implies, it is a quarterly online magazine, and the amount of talent in each issue is just astounding.

I am also posting this for the Blogger’s Quilt Festival over at Amy’s Creative Side!

A copy of the book arrived on my doorstep just 7 days ago; I had no idea it was coming, although I had heard of the book around the web. The cover looked super-enticing, and I figured if it was connected to Fat Quarterly, it must be good.

Well, let me just tell you that after perusing the book, I immediately knew I had to make one of the projects in it. And NOW. This is no small thing; I’m getting ready for Quilt Market next week, and have been sewing up a lot of outfits to wear there, as well as a new tote bag, among other things. There was no room in the schedule for another project. But of course, as we all know, sometimes projects just call to us, and they will not be made to wait.

Project from the book: Cub Crawl Baby Quilt

Okay, before I tell you about my project, let me tell you about the rest of the book! As the cover notes, there are 60 quilt blocks inside, as well as 12 complete quilts/projects. The quilt blocks are very creative and modern, and use some of my favorite fabrics, so it was a joy looking at everything. The complete projects include quilts, a wall hanging, and even a clock! Looking through the projects, I feel like they are for someone who has sewn at least a quilt or quilted project before. The instructions are good and to-the-point. I really enjoy this book because the projects and quilt blocks are very interesting. Sometimes I look at a quilt book and feel like the projects are way too simple and boring (such as sewing charm squares in rows)…not the case here!!

Project from the book: the Tickety Tock Clock

Moving along to the discussion of the quilt I decided to make from the book! Or rather, I should say quilt top, as I haven’t quilted it yet. 😉 I made Orange Soda Quilt, by Katy Jones (from the blog I’m a Ginger Monkey). I love her quilt design. I love that she uses the bright orange fabric. Just my style, and something I would totally do myself. I love her even more that she used Echino fabrics for her quilt. Can I say that I have a love affair with Echino fabrics. I do. The instructions for the quilt call for 5″ squares for the patchwork, however, I decided to keep my fabrics at 10″ squares. I hosted 2 rounds of Echino 10-squares swaps last year, so they were already cut. Bonus. I also delved into my stash for a few more squares. My quilt is 7 squares across by 10 down, and each one is unique…no repeats!

Because my squares were larger, I had to alter the size of the ‘slices’, which I did on a piece of Pellon Tru-Grid. I kept adding 1/4″ all around the slice until I arrived at the correct length. This worked out great because I only had to cut about 1/3 of the amount of the slices as in the pattern. My ‘slice’ fabric is a fun text print called Word Play. I adhered it to the quilt, to be appliqued, using Pellon #805 Wonder Under, which is a fusible paper-backed web. I am using Pellon Nature’s Touch 100% cotton batting, which is available at most Joann Fabrics. My new favorite batting (I previously used Warm & Natural).

All-in-all, great pattern. Super book. A must-have! I can definitely see it being used a lot in quilting bees, as there are so many fun blocks inside.

Now, for the fun stuff…want to win yourself a copy?! Make sure you click on the link below to take you to the entry page. You have until Tuesday, May 15th at 7pm CT to enter!
