Lunch Sack

Another Christmas present down! Errr….maybe. It’s sort of lopsided, so I’m not sure if I’m completely happy with how it turned out.

I used the free tutorial to make a lunch sack from A Lemon Squeezy Home. It’s for my brother, although I intended it as an insulated bag that he could use to transport his bait.

Fabric – I used the same Timeless Treasures fish fabric that I also used to make these Pop Can Cozies. You only need 1/3 of a yard. The pattern also calls for heavyweight interfacing (I used Pellon Peltex), and some sort of PUL or vinyl for the interior (to make it easy to wipe down if the inside gets spilled on). I added the extra layer of Insul-Bright to make the bag insulated.

Pattern Pieces – There is only one pattern piece to print out, for the flap. The only other piece you need is a rectangle, which you measure out yourself and attach the flap to. Piece of cake.

Illustrations/Instructions – There are plenty of photos to take you step-by-step through the pattern. The instructions are very easy to follow, and there is an addendum at the end to help you sew a bag that can hold its shape better.

I decided to go with the bias tape finish, rather than sewing and turning, which is always tricky when you’re using Peltex. I machine sewed the bias tape to the flap, but the rest of the bias (the sides and front of the bag) had to be handsewn because I didn’t feel confident I could get the bulk through my machine well.

Conclusion – This is a cute sack if you need a little something for the kids. I probably wouldn’t make it again, because I have seen some patterns for lunch bags that I liked a little better, but seeing as this was a free tutorial, it fit my needs. A beginner would be able to get through this pattern.

What a great idea to use the insulated lunch bag for a bait bag 🙂
